On the morning of August 9th 1945, air raid sirens began to ring out in the Japanese city of Nagasaki. However, a short while later the sirens rang out again indicating that there was no danger and people began to climb out of their shelters to carry on about their daily business. Japanese spotters had only identified two United States Army Air Force B-29 bombers and they had previously flown to the city of Kokura without dropping any weapons so Japanese authorities presumed they were merely on a reconnaissance mission. Six days after the attack, Japan surrendered to the Allies bringing to a close the most destructive conflict in recorded history that ended with the first two – and so far, only - nuclear attacks in history. It was the Second World War. In this, the first of a two-part special, we are going to examine some of the key elements and incidents of what is probably the single most influential conflict in the course of Human history. Hi everyone, I'm sorry for the very long wait in uploads, however, hopefully you will understand why, as it has taken me almost a year to research and produce this video. On September 1st, 1939, Germany declares war on Poland and throws the world into the largest conflict humanity has ever seen. I have done my best to do accurate borders, encirclements and army sizes. If you see any mistakes or inaccuraices, or if you simply just have suggestions, then let me kno in the comments and I will include them in my next video! Besides, sit back and relax, I hope that you enjoy the video!

With the onset of Spring 1942, the war in the east was ready to begin again but the problem of supplies particularly of oil was forever a worry for the German High Command and so they planned for an offensive that if successful would not only alleviate their fuel shortage but also deny the Soviets their own fuel stocks. Part of that plan involved a city on the edge of the Volga River in eastern Ukraine. This city formerly known as Volgagrad had since been bestowed with the name of the Soviet leader himself and while few people before the war knew it even existed, in the decades since its name has adorned almost every history book as an example of what occurs when two powerful forces clash and refuse to submit to the other. World War II Documentary - The Second World War is the deadliest conflict in human history. From Pearl Harbour and The Rise of The Third Reich to The Battle of Britain and Operation Barbarossa, The Second World War spans vast lands and cultures. |Try two months of Skillshare for free: 🤍 | This video specialises on the European front and delves into the international politics and battles of the time. Part 2 will focus on Pearl Harbour, Japan, China, North Africa and much more. Try two months of Skillshare for free: 🤍 In the Second World War, every bond between man and man was to perish. Crimes were committed by the Germans under the Hitlerite domination to which they allowed themselves to be subjected which find no equal in scale and wickedness with any that have darkened the human record. The wholesale massacre by systematised processes of six or seven millions of men, women, and children in the German execution camps exceeds in horror the rough-and-ready butcheries of Genghis Khan, and in scale reduces them to pigmy proportions. Deliberate extermination of whole populations was contemplated and pursued by both Germany and Russia in the Eastern war. The hideous process of bombarding open cities from the air, once started by the Germans, was repaid twenty-fold by the ever-mounting power of the Allies and found its culmination in the use of the atomic bombs which obliterated Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Summary of Events 1939-1945 The European Theater GERMAN AGGRESSION The war in Europe began in September 1939, when Germany, under Chancellor Adolf Hitler, invaded Poland. Britain and France responded by declaring war on Germany but took little action over the following months. In 1940, Germany launched its next initiative by attacking Denmark and Norway, followed shortly thereafter by attacks on Belgium, the Netherlands, and France. All of these nations were conquered rapidly. THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN Later in the summer of 1940, Germany launched a further attack on Britain, this time exclusively from the air. The Battle of Britain was Germany’s first military failure, as the German air force, the Luftwaffe, was never able to overcome Britain’s Royal Air Force. GREECE AND NORTH AFRICA As Hitler plotted his next steps, Italy, an ally of Germany, expanded the war even further by invading Greece and North Africa. The Greek campaign was a failure, and Germany was forced to come to Italy’s assistance in early 1941. THE USSR Later in 1941, Germany began its most ambitious action yet, by invading the Soviet Union. Although the Germans initially made swift progress and advanced deep into the Russian heartland, the invasion of the USSR would prove to be the downfall of Germany’s war effort. The country was just too big, and although Russia’s initial resistance was weak, the nation’s strength and determination, combined with its brutal winters, would eventually be more than the German army could overcome. In 1943, after the battles of Stalingrad and Kursk, Germany was forced into a full-scale retreat. During the course of 1944, the Germans were slowly but steadily forced completely out of Soviet territory, after which the Russians pursued them across eastern Europe and into Germany itself in 1945. THE NORMANDY INVASION In June 1944, British and American forces launched the D-Day invasion, landing in German-occupied France via the coast of Normandy. Soon the German army was forced into retreat from that side as well. Thus, by early 1945, Allied forces were closing in on Germany from both east and west. The Soviets were the first to reach the German capital of Berlin, and Germany surrendered in May 1945, shortly after the suicide of Adolf Hitler. The Pacific Theater PEARL HARBOR The war in the Pacific began on December 7, 1941, when warplanes from Japan launched a surprise attack on the U.S. Navy base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. By this time, Japan had already been at war with China for several years and had seized the Chinese territory of Manchuria. After the Pearl Harbor attack, Japan began a massive campaign of expansion throughout the Southeast Asia–Pacific region. THE U.S. ENTRANCE AND BATTLE OF MIDWAY Although the Pearl Harbor attack provoked a declaration of war by the United States on Japan the very next day, it would be several months before U.S. forces would get seriously involved militarily. In late spring of 1942, the United States and Japan engaged in a series of naval battles, climaxing in the Battle of Midway on June 3–6, 1942, in which Japan suffered a catastrophic defeat. THE SOLOMON ISLANDS AND GUADALCANAL THE APPROACH TO JAPAN Fighting continued throughout the Pacific in 1944 and early 1945, including major battles at Leyte, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. By the late spring of 1945, most of Japan’s conquests had been liberated, and Allied forces were closing in on the Japanese home islands. As they neared Japan proper, the Allies began heavy bombing campaigns against major Japanese cities, including Tokyo. This process continued through the summer of 1945 until finally, in early August, the United States dropped two atomic bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Stunned by the unexpected devastation, Japan surrendered a few days later.

In which John Green teaches you about World War II, aka The Great Patriotic War, aka The Big One. So how did this war happen? And what does it mean? We've all learned the facts about World War II many times over, thanks to repeated classroom coverage, the History channel, and your grandfather (or maybe great-grandfather) showing you that Nazi bayonet he used to keep in his sock drawer and telling you a bunch of age-inappropriate stories about his harrowing war experiences. So, why did the Axis powers think forceful expansion was a good idea? (they were hungry). So why did this thing shake out in favor of the Allies? Hint: it has to do with the fact that it was a world war. Germany and Japan made some pretty serious strategic errors, such as invading Russia and attacking the United States, and those errors meant that pretty much the whole world was against them. So, find out how this worldwide alliance came together to stop the Axis expansion. All this, plus Canada finally gets the respectful treatment it deserves. Oh, and a warning: there are a few graphic images in this episode. Sensitive viewers may want to use caution, especially around the 9:15 mark. Japan's attack had backfired and far from wiping out American influence in the Pacific, they had just awoken a sleeping giant, with the subsequent Battles of the Corral sea and Midway shifting the balance of the war. The Allies would also see success in North Africa, with Erwin Rommel 'The Desert Fox' being forced off the continent, securing Egypt and in particular the Suez Canal for the British. From Africa, the Allies would be able to disrupt Axis operations in the Medditarain with the Invasions of Sicily and Italy all on the horizon. The War was finally turning in the Allies favour and it would not be long until the Axis were retreating, being pushed all the way back to their homelands. The Allies have reached the linchpin of the German defenses in Italy, but a first attack proves disastrous. It does, though, divert troops from where they soon plan to make landings behind enemy lines. Meanwhile in the USSR, the huge Soviet offensive in the north makes great gains against the stunned Axis forces. It was a bitter fight for supremacy in Asia. Japan had provoked the US in the Pacific War. The Second World War now spanned the entire globe. The two naval nations competed against each other on the world’s largest ocean and fought battles on an unprecedented scale. In the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, Japanese bombers destroy most of the American Pacific fleet within hours and kill 2,500 U.S. soldiers. The surprise military strike is intended to help secure Japan's supremacy in the Eastern Pacific. It is the beginning of the Pacific War, which only comes to an end after the atomic bombs are dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the summer of 1945. Sheckler While it is difficult to be precise, it would appear that the United States Army's interest in a transatlantic cable began in early 1942. This is evidenced by the earliest date on some of the Western Union Company's blueprints. It is obvious from Western Union documents that a concerted and continuous effort began at this time. M/Sgt Sheckler School Photo, 1943 The Army Signal Corps collected the necessary personnel during 1943 and at least in some of the cases they were held on "Rations and Quarters" with little or nothing to do. The author had been ill during the summer and the Army sent him home for a ninety day "Recuperative Leave". The group was assembled in New York in January and was assigned to study at the Western Union Company's Research Laboratory at corporate headquarters at 60 Hudson St. The group consisted of eight enlisted men and two Second Lieutenants. The course work was taught by Mr. W.F. Wilder and Mr. Dickey, both of Western Union's engineering department. The instruction started with Lord Kelvin's definitive treatise on telegraphy. All aspects of ocean cable telegraphy were taught, from the simple devices like the siphon recorder to the most modern equipment used on high speed multiplex cables. The work included operation and maintenance of the various machines which we would use. We were also taught the protocol necessary to set up and operate a modern cable station. This all ended, complete with a graduation and diplomas at the end of April 1944. We still were not needed so we marked time, but remained at Western Union. They managed for us to spend time at the operating sites actually seeing the systems work. We visited the terminal at Broad St (CD); we visited the cable terminus at Rockaway Beach (Hammel HM). We visited Commercial Cable's New York offices and their terminal at Far Rockaway. We even spent time at RCA's telegraphic terminal in New York. About June 4 we were told that we were leaving immediately and on June 6, 1944 we were on board the Queen Mary bound for Europe, but we still did not know anything about our organization. The Light of Dawn tells the story of Operation Overlord. It traces one of the largest military operations man has ever conceived since the summer of 1941 - when Churchill and Roosevelt first broached the issue - to June 6, 1944. He deciphers the strategy of 'Hitler to make it fail. The film recounts this crucial turning point in World War II where questions of geopolitics (the difficult alliance between London, Moscow and Washington), the various military strategies and technological prowess as well as the fate of the young soldiers who attacked the wall of the Atlantic will pay a heavy price. The landing will be told here in the style of a play with its intrigues, its dramas, the art of bluffing and the fate of the world being played out. Entirely written with archival footage remastered and colorized, this 90-minute film written and directed by Jean-Christophe Rosé was produced for France Télévisions as part of the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings in June 2014. The Holocaust was the state-sponsored, systematic persecution and annihilation of European Jewry by Nazi Germany and its collaborators, between 1933 and 1945. Jews were the primary victims - six million were murdered. Roma (Gypsies), physically and mentally disabled people and Poles were also targeted for destruction or decimation for racial, ethnic, or national reasons. Millions more, including homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses, Soviet prisoners of war, and political dissidents also suffered grievous oppression and death under Nazi tyranny.
