Medvedev claimed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky could be killed by his "masters." He said that if Kyiv doesn’t show its masters a return on their investment, then the west’s disappointment could cost Volodymyr Zelensky and his friends not only their posts but their lives as well. Zelensky’s success as a wartime leader has relied on the fact that courage is contagious. It spread through Ukraine’s political leadership in the first days of the invasion, as everyone realized the President had stuck around. If that seems like a natural thing for a leader to do in a crisis, consider historical precedent. Only six months earlier, the President of Afghanistan, Ashraf Ghani—a far more experienced leader than Zelensky—fled his capital as Taliban forces approached. In 2014, one of Zelensky’s predecessors, Viktor Yanukovych, ran away from Kyiv as protesters closed in on his residence; he still lives in Russia today. Early in the Second World War, the leaders of Albania, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Greece, Poland, the Netherlands, Norway, and Yugoslavia, among others, fled the advance of the German Wehrmacht and lived out the war in exile. There wasn’t much in Zelensky’s biography to predict his willingness to stand and fight. He had never served in the military or shown much interest in its affairs. He had only been President since April 2019. His professional instincts derived from a lifetime as an actor on the stage, a specialist in improv comedy, and a producer in the movie business. That experience turned out to have its advantages. Zelensky was adaptable, trained not to lose his nerve under pressure. He knew how to read a crowd and react to its moods and expectations. Now his audience was the world. He was determined not to let them down. He spoke to reporters as he stood beside Moldovan President Maia Sandu after arriving for a summit of the European Political Community which is being hosted by Ukraine's neighbour. The summit of the EU's 27 member states and 20 other European countries at a castle deep in Moldovan wine country was taking place just 20 km (12 miles) from Ukrainian territory and near the Russian-backed breakaway region of Transdniestria.
Polls suggest Volodymyr Zelenskiy, a comedian with no previous political experience, has become one of the frontrunners in Ukraine's presidential election. His campaign is blurring the line between fact and fiction, as he stars in a hit TV series in which he plays a teacher who unexpectedly becomes president. Some recent polls even put Mr Zelenskiy ahead of current President Petro Poroshenko, as well as opposition leader and former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, for the vote scheduled to begin with a first round on 31 March. However, there are some important differences between Mr Zelenskiy and the TV character he plays, as BBC Ukraine Correspondent Jonah Fisher reports. Please subscribe HERE 🤍

Sunak and other G7 leaders on Friday agreed to tighten sanctions against Moscow and pare back exposure to China. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy visited the flooded southern region of Kherson on Thursday (June 8) to discuss emergency operations after flooding caused by the destruction of a huge dam. Moscow, which launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and Kyiv blamed each other for the destruction of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Station and dam on Tuesday, which unleashed flood water from the Dnipro River. Zelenskiy visited a road crossing in Kherson where people were being evacuated. He also met local authorities to discuss "the operational situation in the region as a result of the disaster, evacuation of the population from potential flood zones, elimination of the emergency caused by the dam explosion, organization of life support for the flooded areas," Zelenskiy said on the Telegram messaging app. "Also, the prospects for restoring the region's ecosystem and the operational military situation in the man-made disaster area, " he added. Kherson lies on the Dnipro, about 60 km (37 miles) downstream from the Kakhovka dam. In a separate post, also accompanied by video footage, the president said he had visited a road crossing where people were being evacuated. Kherson's governor had said earlier on Thursday that 600 square kilometers, or 230 square miles, of the region, was under water - most of it on the Russian-occupied side of the river - and that nearly 2,000 people had already left affected areas. "It is important to calculate the damage and allocate funds to compensate residents affected by the disaster and develop a program to compensate for losses or relocate businesses within the Kherson region," Zelenskiy said. 2022 struck our hearts. We cried out all the tears. All the prayers were yelled. 311 days. We have something to say about every minute. But most words are superfluous. No explanation needed. Silence is needed to hear. Pauses are needed to realize We don't know for sure what new 2023 will bring us. I want to wish all of us one thing – victory. And that's the main thing. Let this year be the year of return. The return of our people. Soldiers – to their families. Prisoners – to their homes. Immigrants – to their Ukraine. The return of our lands. And the temporarily occupied will become forever free. Return to normal life. To happy moments without curfew. To earthly joys without air alerts. The return of what has been stolen from us. The childhood of our children, the peaceful old age of our parents. May the New Year bring all it. We're ready to fight for it. That's why each of us is here. I'm here. We're here. You're here. Everyone's here. We're all Ukraine. Glory to Ukraine! Happy New Year!
