Day 654: Dec 09 Today, there are a lot of new developments in the Avdiivka direction. Here, Russian forces changed their plan of attack in the northern part of the region. Up until this point, the main target of the Russian forces was Berdychi because by reaching this settlement, Russians would be able to establish tight fire control over the supply roads and put Ukrainian forces in Avdiivka into an operational encirclement. Even though some Russian sources continue claiming that Russian forces breached the Ukrainian defense in Stepove and are about to finish the job, the reality is quite different. The abundant footage released by the Ukrainian side shows that Ukrainians are firmly controlling the ground and are destroying Russian assault units the moment they cross the rails. Sometimes combat footage confirms that Russians managed to reach the first houses, but hiding in the basements in hopes of being evacuated can hardly be considered a stable foothold. After seeing minimal to no gains in the Berdychi direction, the Russian commanders were forced to change their operational goals. Based on the fact that Russians recently shifted their focus a bit to the south, it became clear that Russians decided to decrease the scale of the encirclement operation because their new target became the Khimik train station. This station is located just south of the main Ukrainian fortification – the chemical plant. The goal here is to move along the residential area towards the center of Avdiivka and cut off Ukrainian forces in the southern part of the settlement. A successful Russian advance in this region would indeed be catastrophic for Ukrainians because all Ukrainian supply roads are moving exactly through this region. The new Russian plan of downsizing their offensive operation to match the amount of resources available is actually quite clever, however, it doesn’t mean that the execution will be smooth or easy. The biggest weakness of the Russian forces in this case is their logistics. By choosing this vector of attack, the Russian commanders basically forced their soldiers to use some of the riskiest and most exposed routes. The roads have already become notorious among Russian soldiers because they are under Ukrainian ATGM fire control from the chemical plant and also drones. Even if Russian soldiers travel by foot, which is mostly how they travel in this region, there is virtually no possibility for them to accumulate forces in front of Ukrainian positions for an easier and quicker attack. So, they cannot copy the tactic that they used along the railways. Ukrainians, in turn, have a dense residential area and a small forest at their disposal, and they are also within a hundred meters from their main base. Since the area is split into two parts by the water reservoir, Russian forces opened two directions of attack: towards the residential area and the water pumping station. When it comes to the station, the results were devasting to the Russians. Ukrainian fighters from the famous 110th mechanized brigade released one of the most brutal and graphic combat footage of the aftermath. Since Russian soldiers had to assault in the open, many of them did not even reach the pumping station. The drones quickly detected them and started hunting them down together with mortar teams. As a result, there was no intact corpse on the ground. The fire was precise, and virtually no one survived the explosions. Those that survived were doomed anyway. Because the supporting attack failed, Russian forces in the residential area could not develop their operation due to crossfire, even though they achieved initial success and got a foothold in the first four lines of houses. After the attack was stopped by the defenders on the ground, Ukrainian fighters from the Khorne Group were redeployed from Stepove to this region to clear it. Ukrainians conducted intense aerial reconnaissance, identified all houses where Russians established their presence, and sent a tank to demolish them. The tank got to the position within several minutes, and in coordination with drone pilots who were helping to navigate and correct the fire, they unleashed fire on Russian positions. The video shows how some Russian soldiers are fleeing the area to escape the fire, possibly completely leaving the settlement.

Day 653: Dec 08 Today, the biggest news comes from the Kherson region. Here, Ukrainian activity started posing a significant threat to Russian objectives, which is why Russians gathered their forces and attempted to undercut Ukrainian forces from the southwest. According to Russian sources, Ukrainians conducted a series of offensive actions in the forest and started building formidable defenses. Ukrainian sources claimed that Ukrainians entrenched long ago, it’s just that recently, Russians discovered that Ukrainians were rapidly improving the captured trenches and fortifications, which made Russians quite concerned. In fact, Russian forces found it so difficult to dislodge Ukrainian marines from their positions that it was decided to use a new tactic. Based on the geolocated footage, Russian forces conducted an attack from the western edge of the forest that is not under Ukrainian control and tried to advance toward the central part of the settlement, thereby slowly putting Ukrainian marines in the forest into a pocket. The main idea was not to establish firm control over this part of the settlement but rather create a threat of encirclement by undercutting Ukrainians from the southwest in hopes of forcing Ukrainians to retreat. If Ukrainians retreated, Russians would be able to assume control over these crucial strongpoints in the forest and use them against Ukrainians. The operation started with an extensive bombardment to force Ukrainians who were holding positions inside the settlement to flee back to the islands, thereby opening the ground for the Russian attack. Unfortunately for Russians, this did not change the situation a lot because the settlement is very narrow, more precisely, around 350 meters, which is why Ukrainians do not need to maintain a permanent presence in the ruins in the first place. Some Russian analysts claimed that Ukrainians are located in the forest or dense tree areas immediately in front and behind the settlement, and the ground is under constant supervision of drones. So, when Russians launch an attack, Ukrainian drone pilots usually spot them on the approach, and Ukrainian marines advance inside the settlement to meet the Russian assault groups. That is why all engagements here are always characterized by both parties as meeting engagements. And this is exactly what happened after the artillery preparation. The moment Russian forces started attempting to enter the village, Ukrainians were already ready to meet them. The footage shows that Russians tried to suppress Ukrainian fire to no avail, then made an attempt to change their positions but unsuccessfully. As a result, a lot of Russian soldiers died, while a few were seen fleeing the area. Russian sources released a video showing how a small group tried to outflank Ukrainians and fired with RPG, however, this did no help. Ukrainian fighters also previously released a video confirming that the forest line is also under tight control of Ukrainian snipers. The snipers were eliminating Russian reconnaissance units that were trying to identify Ukrainian firing points prior to the main attack. Moreover, today, the commander of the famous Madiar’s Birds Detachment posted a video showing how his units demolished multiple pieces of heavy equipment in the forest that Russians were carefully preparing for the main assault. The first armored fighting vehicle was spotted by the drone with a thermal camera shortly after the vehicle was parked. The vehicle was promptly destroyed by the so-called Baba Yaga drones that carry at least 3 heavy mines. Madiar also said that his units are using drones to distantly mine certain areas, especially intersections. As a result, they managed to immobilize 3 more Russian armored fighting vehicles. Due to the limited visibility, they simply cannot notice mines on the corners and are easily trapped. As the vehicles cannot be evacuated quickly, Ukrainians usually have more than enough time to send Baba Yagas to finish the job. Because Russians were preparing to use these vehicles for an assault, they were fully loaded with ammo, which resulted in a powerful detonation that tore the vehicles to pieces.

Elite Russian paratroopers attacked Ukrainian lines somewhere near Bakhmut. At least three armoured vehicles and a tank were used during the assault carrying dozens of troops into battle who dismount and charge the Ukrainians. The tank provides covering fire using its main cannon, as artillery rains down. It is unclear exactly what the outcome of the battle was. British special forces were on the ground in Ukraine during the initial days of Russia-Ukraine war, according to the Declassified UK report citing the newly published book by Polish journalist Zbigniew Parafianowicz. The report is based on an unnamed Polish minister who was in Ukraine in March 2022. Russia's giant 2S4 Tyulpan (Tulip) self-propelled mortar has been used to pummel Ukrainian forces, but it does have a weakness on the battlefield. The 30-tonne tracked vehicle mounts a 240mm mortar and is the largest self-propelled mortar in the world today, with the weapon designed to destroy heavy fortifications and large buildings. Day 650: Dec 05 Today, there are a lot of updates from the Kherson region. Here, the most intense clashes are taking place in the forest south of Krynky. Russian sources reported that the forest area is characterized by constant meeting engagements because both sides are actively trying to push each other out. Many Russian sources admitted that Ukrainians managed to secure new gains south of hothouses, although they tried to dismiss them as temporary or mild. Some analysis claimed that this is a direct result of the recent regrouping under the veil of fog and rain. Moreover, Russian soldiers complained that even after the fog dissipated, Ukrainian forces continued attempts to transfer reinforcements and supplies to positions on the left bank. In order to undermine Ukrainian offensive capabilities in the region, Russian forces doubled down on airstrikes with the goal of destroying Ukrainian supplies of ammunition and equipment, as well as manpower. Due to the density of Ukrainian air defense, Russian forces stopped relying on attack helicopters, such as Ka-52 and Mi-24. Ukrainian Tavriisk Group of Forces Spokesman Oleksandr Shtupun stated that Ukrainian forces shoot them down as soon as they enter the range. Moreover, Shtupun stated that due to Ukrainian air defense capability, Russians find it risky to even get within 40-kilometer reach to launch FAB glide bombs, prompting Russians to use KAB glide bombs, which can be launched from a safer distance. The problem with KAB bombs is that they are even less accurate. Today, Russian analysts posted and analyzed complaints of the Russian soldiers who are operating in Krynky. Russian soldiers reported that they intercepted a Ukrainian drone and used the tape to find out the location of the Ukrainian drone operators. They said that after many hurdles, they finally managed to communicate the coordinates to the Russian Air Force, however, the launched bomb missed the target. They tried to reorder the strike, but the Russian Air Force replied that the strike had been successful. It seems like if the bomb explodes, the strike is marked as successful. As a result, Ukrainian drone operators escaped. Interestingly, Ukrainian forces recently posted a video featuring the same operation but against Russian drone operators. The operation was conducted by the famous Madiar’s Birds Detachment. Madiar said that his electronic warfare group successfully intercepted a Russian drone and immediately analyzed the footage to identify the location and, once identified, sent it to the reconnaissance drone operators for verification. A Ukrainian drone pilot noticed an unusual antenna and a cable that was leading directly to the house nearby. The house turned out to have a few windows that were also very small, so instead of attacking them with kamikaze drones, Ukrainians ordered a HIMARS strike. A few minutes later, the house was completely eliminated, together with all Russian drone operators. And this is extremely important because as Russian artillery and aviation are unresponsive and inaccurate, Russian soldiers on the contact line are mostly relying on the help from drone crews. If a reconnaissance team loses all drones, they are forced to conduct reconnaissance by foot. Russian drone operators understand that the chances of survival would not be very high in this case, which is why they minimize the use of drones, which in turn gives more freedom of movement for Ukrainians. Moreover, today, Madiar posted a video reporting that they crowdfunded 180 new boats for the marines. He said that the marines had already received 56 boats and showed the arrival of the new batch of 30 news boats that were immediately transported to respective detachments. Even though Ukrainians have some specialized boats equipped with machine guns, they are less mobile and easier to spot compared to conventional small boats, and since Ukrainians have established virtually full control over the river delta, there is no one to shoot from these machine guns as Ukrainians are on both sides of the river. Under such conditions, using smaller but more mobile boats that Ukrainian people helped to purchase for the fighters is much more convenient. So, the new batch of boats means that Ukrainians will continue to push and expand the bridgehead, and we will receive more news from this region very soon.

This is the moment Ukraine’s 129th and 110th Territorial Defence Brigade work together to push back an enemy assault. Dozens of Russian troops are carried into battle inside infantry fighting vehicles, before rushing into a tree-line. But they are spotted by the Ukrainians, who begin raining artillery fire down on top of them. The Russian assault squads are badly mauled by the shelling, and the survivors attempt to flee the battle once they think the bombardment it over, but it isn’t. A drone that had been hovering over them directs another artillery attack towards the troops trying to escape. As you remember, Russian forces stopped using heavy equipment in the northern part of the region because the roads are exposed to Ukrainian fire from all sides and because of the minefields. That is why Russian soldiers had to use their feet to travel to the contact line. However, after the previous Russian massive infantry attack failed due to cluster munitions and machine guns, the Russian commanders decided to support their infantry with armor. Before launching the main attack, Russian forces conducted a reconnaissance-in-force operation with one tank. The goal here was to check whether the tank has a chance of reaching Stepove and, ideally, also demolish Ukrainian firing positions that were identified previous time. Ukrainian reconnaissance teams spotted the Russian tank in advance, and the units on the ground got ready to meet it. Ukrainians responded reciprocally and also deployed a tank to the region. The moment the Russian tank assumed its firing position, Ukrainians opened fire. As a result, the Russian tank sustained damage, its turret stopped working, so Russians quickly deployed smokescreen and moved back behind the rails. It seems like the Russian commanders were satisfied with the performance because the next morning, Russians launched a mechanized assault. Ukrainian soldiers reported that Russians used 10 tanks and armored fighting vehicles and up to 100 troops in the attack. Unfortunately for Russians, this time, Ukrainians were not distracted by any other attack and met the Russian assault units right in front of the railways. A fighter from the Khorne Group reported that Russians did not even manage to reach the positions of Ukrainian infantry because the first 4 vehicles were destroyed with kamikaze drones, the other vehicles decided to escape, and the infantry followed them. Still, Ukrainians counted 40 more fresh corpses. Later that day, Ukrainians reported another wave of attack, this time purely with infantry, without any support from armored vehicles, but were met with machine gun fire from a Bradley. In the meantime, Russian forces tried to reestablish control over the positions north of the chemical plant. As you remember, according to the Ukrainian Avdiivka Military Head and geolocated footage from Ukrainian Special Forces, the area was cleared. Nonetheless, recent combat footage shows that a new batch of Russian troops arrived to secure these positions. Simultaneously, according to the Institute for the Study of War, Ukrainians conducted a successful attack from the chemical plant along the rails and secured their positions. So, it seems like after the previous clashes, the area became a grey zone, and both parties tried to recapture it. Russians attacked it from the north and are now holding the ground, while Ukrainians attacked from the south and are now holding the ground. Russian commanders understand that the current level of control is insufficient for the resumption of the attack on the chemical plant, which is why the clashes for this strongpoint are expected to continue. In order to undermine the Russian offensive capabilities, Ukrainian forces conducted a missile strike on the main Russian logistical center in the region. After Ukrainians cut off the connection with Horlivka by blowing up a bridge, Donetsk became the main supply hub of both flanks. Local residents reported hearing a series of powerful explosions followed by secondary detonations. Judging also by the scale of the fire, Ukrainians managed to unveil and destroy a huge ammunition depot on the outskirts of the city. In the aftermath of the strike, Russian forces are expected to ration their supplies of ammunition and equipment and decrease the pace of their offensive operation, giving Ukrainians an opportunity to improve their tactical position.
