First released in 1984, the comics were mainly intended to promote a new toy line and create a setting for fantasy battles. With the film likely to adapt the 2015 comics instead for its more substantial content, the MCU must make sure that there’s a thorough setup for each of its characters and plots instead of something more insubstantial. The original Secret Wars is regarded as one of the first crossover events in the Marvel comics, bringing characters from different storylines and universes together. With its nature, there will likely be a plethora of heroes the audience will have to follow. While Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War show that the MCU is no stranger to an ensemble cast of heroes, Avengers: Secret Wars will have a more difficult job of setting up its battles thanks to the sheer amount of diversity on display in the comic book source material. Onslaught sought to spread fear across the world in a twisted attempt to unify humans and mutants, waging several psychological attacks on the X-Men before eventually going head-to-head with the combined forces of the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, and Doctor Doom. Onslaught's eventual defeat led to the apparent deaths of several of the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and Doctor Doom, though the heroes were kept safe on Counter-Earth. Marvel Comics' Onslaught crossover storyline has been speculated to be coming to the MCU thanks to Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen's rumored involvement in Deadpool 3, which creates the opportunity to feature Doom initially as a hero. However, it seems unlikely that someone as major as Doctor Doom would be introduced during Deadpool 3, especially considering the multiversal film promises to be jam-packed with action and returning characters from Fox's X-Men franchise. Kang Dynasty will come out in 2025 and Secret Wars will come out in 2026—a year that SOUNDS futuristic but is like, three years away. These films will wrap up MCU’s Phase 6 and the Multiverse Saga, with Jonathan Majors playing the latest Big Bad, Kang the Conqueror. And… that’s about all we know about these movies, at least right now. Obviously, both will be huge, epic blockbusters featuring most if not all of the MCU characters who’ve starred in Phase 4 movies and TV shows. Kang Dynasty might end on a cliffhanger, just as Infinity War led into Endgame. Those movies were also released a year apart. But WHO will be the main characters of these films, and not just cameos or minor roles. Who will actually make up the titular Avengers? And will there even BE an actual group of superheroes called the “Avengers”? Or is “Avengers” now just a shorthand way for Marvel to describe their big crossover movies? Fans are asking these questions because Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars will be different from the Avengers films we’re used to. Tony Stark won’t be leading a team of the Original Six. Most, if not all of those characters probably won’t appear (and definitely won’t star) in these new movies. Doug: Original Six? You mean, Jack, Kate, Hurley, Sun, Sayid, and Baby Aaron? Ryan: No, that’s the Oceanic Six from Lost. And also spoilers. No, the original Six are of course Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye. They were the original team in the first Avengers film and the first sequel, Age of Ultron. They were also part of the expanded team that went back in time in Avengers: Endgame. Phase 1 of the MCU was all about setting up these characters and their epic team-up in the original Avengers film. Phase FOUR on the other hand was Marvel making a big push to move on from those original films and greatly expand the MCU’s roster of superheroes. Tony and Natasha died in Endgame, and Steve Rogers retired. Maybe he wants to move to Florida. [CLIP: No I don’t think I will] Clint also retired, before being dragged into the events of the Hawkeye series. So who from the remaining heroes of the Infinity Saga–and of all the new faces we’ve met in Phase 4 so far–are being set up to lead the storylines in Kang Dynasty? Kang Dynasty’s director will be Shang-Chi director Daniel Daniel Cretton, and it would be kind of silly if he wasn’t reunited with Simu Liu. Even Liu thinks so, saying in an interview that he was excited to work with Cretton on the film. But Shang-Chi makes a lot of sense storywise too. I’ve mentioned in a few videos how the Ten Rings seem connected to the quantumverse and whatever Kang’s plan is in the upcoming Quantumania film. It’s likely the source of Shang-Chi’s power will either make him a target of Kang, or the perfect hero to stand against him. This is likely what the post-credits scene in Shang-Chi was setting up. There, we see Wong introduce Shaun and Katy to Captain Marvel and Bruce Banner. The rings are emitting a beacon, presumably to their origin point. Carol says they’re not of alien origin—which doesn’t disqualify the quantumverse, which isn’t really her jurisdiction. Maybe just as importantly, Bruce says THIS to Shaun. Obviously he’s implying that Shang-Chi’s world is about to get pretty crazy. But he could also be formally inviting him to join the Avengers. After all, the three Infinity saga characters in this scene were three of the heroes that survived the Snap and helped defeat Thanos. In Endgame, Captain Marvel was seen reporting to Natasha, who was based out of the Avengers compound. While it’s not explicitly said, that’s probably because this was a meeting of the post-Snap Avengers lineup. While we didn’t see Bruce or Wong in this meeting, Bruce was likely still a member of the team. Wong may have been busy as the new Sorcerer Supreme, but at the very least he was likely a close ally of the new Avengers.
A lot has changed in the MCU since the events of Avengers: Endgame, including the fact that there isn’t actually an Avengers team anymore. New heroes have been rising up to fill the void left by Iron Man and Captain America, but it’s going to be a while before we get a proper Avengers movie again. Only at the end of Phase 6 in 2025, when Marvel delivers the one-two-punch of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars, will we see Earth’s Mightiest Heroes reunited. Who will answer the call? Well, we've got some ideas about the characters you can (probably) expect to see assemble as Avengers in Marvel Phase 6. From Wong to Thor to Ms. Marvel to Spider-Man and beyond, the new Avengers are sure to be a very different superhero group from the original Avengers particularly in the absence of Tony Stark and Steve Rogers. The team got a new headquarters, added some new members, broke up, reunited, and saved the world a few times in between. But today I want to talk about OTHER Avengers teams, and I don’t mean alternate versions from the multiverse. Doug: Oh, you mean the other Avengers with Uma Thurman and Ralph Fiennes fighting Sean Connery with umbrellas? Ryan: No, I definitely DON’T mean that, either. And I also don’t mean other Marvel superteams like the Guardians of the Galaxy, the Defenders, the Midnight Sons, or the Revengers. [CLIP: The Revengers] I’m talking about Avengers offshoots, various spinoff versions of the team that exist in the comics. If you watch this channel, you’ve probably heard me mention a few before, like the Dark Avengers and the Young Avengers. But today I want to FOCUS on these other Avengers teams and their members. I’m going to go through which ones we’ve sort of seen on screen already, which ones are unlikely to but COULD show up, and which ones are almost DEFINITELY being set up to join the MCU – and soon. Doug: Oooh, you mean the Great Lakes Avengers. Ryan: What? No, Doug, I definitely don’t mean Doorman, Big Bertha, or the rest of the Great Lakes Avengers. Doug: But the signs are all but obvious. Do you even WATCH these movies, Person? Ryan: Okay if there’s time, we’ll get to the Great Lakes Avengers. But first, I want to talk about slightly more prominent teams, like the New Avengers. The New Avengers was a Marvel comics series that began in 2004 and was written by Brian Michael Bendis. The New Avengers, like some other “offshoots,” are technically a direct continuation of the main Avengers. Part of the Civil War arc, members of the Avengers who don’t comply with the Superhuman Registration Act make up the New Avengers — still performing their world-saving duties, even though they’re wanted by the government. [CLIP: War Criminal] In the comics, members of the New Avengers include Cap, Bucky, Luke Cage, Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, Echo, and Wolverine. Even though they’re never explicitly called this, we’ve pretty much seen the New Avengers in the MCU already. Actually, you could interpret two separate groups as the New Avengers. There’s the NEW lineup we saw at the end of Age of Ultron, when Iron Man, Hawkeye, Hulk, and Thor are succeeded by Rhodey, Vision, Falcon, Scarlet Witch, and your Mom. At the time, many fans considered them the MCU version of the New Avengers, even though they had nothing to do with the Superhuman Registration Act or being outlaws. (The rationale being that the MCU will often take pretty wide liberties with some comic storylines.) [CLIP: Trevor Slattery.] The “real” New Avengers would be the team that DOES go on the lam after refusing to sign the Sokovia Accords — the MCU version of the Superhuman Registration Act. This includes Cap, Bucky, Falcon, and Black Widow. They basically remain as vigilante fugitives for two years until the Snap, and besides a solo adventure with Black Widow, we never really got to see what this crew was up to during this time period. While the MCU has moved waaaaay on, it would be really cool if we got a flashback movie or series that takes place in the period between Civil War and when we see them show up in Scotland. It would be a great way to bring Chris Evans back without convoluting continuity, and we could see more of how Vision and Wanda’s relationship blossomed. It could even serve as a prequel series to the Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and be titled “The New Avengers.” OR it could be titled the “Secret Avengers,” another name that some fans gave this group during Phase 3. Again, this would be a loose MCU interpretation of the comics’ Secret Avengers, which was a black-ops team led by Cap in the post-Civil War era. Unlike the New Avengers, the comic book Secret Avengers WERE sanctioned by the government, but faced off with Nick Fury of all people. [CLIP: “Want to see my lease?”]

Iron Fist | S1 E5 Thor and the Future Avengers visit K'un Lun where they meet Iron First who agrees to train the kids in martial arts but Makoto is frustrated by the seemingly-pointless exercises. Secret Past of Iron Man | S1 E6 Iron Man is forced to confront the mistakes of his past when the son of the villain Iron Monger returns to avenge his father and destroy Tony Stark once and for all. Here Comes Deadpool! | S1 E7 While the Future Avengers are "house-sitting" Avengers Tower, the wise-cracking mercenary Deadpool breaks in and makes himself at home. Super Soldier: Steve Rogers | S1 E8 Bruno is revived on the Hydra island base and falls into the hands of the Leader, the Winter Soldier, Ares, and Enchantress. Meanwhile, Captain America battles the Winter Soldier. Who is the Winter Soldier? | S1 E9 With the world believing the Avengers to be dead, the Masters of Evil put their villainous plan in motion. It's up to Captain Marvel, Black Widow, and Hawkeye to stop them.
