Watch more How to Recognize & Treat Eating Disorders videos: 🤍 "Eating disorder, not otherwise specified" is kind of this long, too many words term that's kind of a catch all phrase within the Diagnostic Manual most commonly used amongst mental health professionals in the United States, the DSM IV. It's kind of a catchall diagnosis to refer to a lot of different types of eating disorder problems that don't neatly follow into the other eating disorder diagnosis categories. So they don't neatly fall into the category of either anorexia nervosa, or bulimia nervosa. So currently in the DSM IV, "Eating disorder, not otherwise specified" refers to a variety of different types of eating problems such as binge-eating disorder, such as night-eating syndrome, and such as purging disorder. And "Eating disorder, not otherwise specified" also refers to a variety of different types of restrictive tendencies, or binge eating or purging tendencies, that don't quite meet the criteria for anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa. "Eating disorder, not otherwise specified", because it is such a broad category, currently represents the majority of eating disorder diagnoses. With the revision of the Diagnostic Manual, the DSM IV, conversion into DSM V, which has been happening over the past few years and will probably roll out in the coming year or so. We expect there to be somewhat fewer "Eating disorder, not otherwise specified" diagnoses, because new diagnostic categories are being added to the DSM, like "Binge-eating disorder". So that folks with binge-eating disorder are expected to now receive their own diagnosis of binge-eating disorder, and will no longer be called, "Eating disorder, not otherwise specified". Still in the confirmation process, the book hasn't come out yet. So until it does, stay tuned, but that will be one step that will reduce the use of that type of diagnosis, and get at trying to be more specific about some of those types of eating problems in the future.

Recovery 1:1 coaching: 🤍 Invisible eating disorders interview with Therese: 🤍 Many people suffer from invisible eating disorders. It's very unfortunate that so many people feel they don't deserve help because they are not "sick enough" and don't fit under the typical eating disorder stereotype - the underweight teenage girl who doesn't eat. An eating disorder is not a "one size fits all" kind of destination where you must get in order to deserve help and feel like your issue is taken seriously. In eating disorders there is a lot of grey area where symptoms can vary from person to person. You don't need a medical diagnosis or a specific label in order to feel that your struggle is validated and real. It's most important that you validate yourself and seek out help. To put it very simply - if you feel your eating is not normal and it causes you stress then you deserve and need to get help and support. In today's post, I talk more about the invisible eating disorders, what they are and how they may appear for different people. In this video, Renee Hoste, Ph.D., discusses how an eating disorder affects the way a person thinks. The University of Michigan Comprehensive Eating Disorders Program provides individualized, compassionate, evidence-based care for patients age 8-24 with eating disorders. We recognize that eating disorders are complicated illnesses caused by genetic, psychological and psychosocial factors, and that neither our patients nor their families are responsible for having developed an eating disorder. Our program was designed to honor the importance of families in the recovery process, and is built on the principles of family-based treatment, also known as the Maudsley Approach, adapted for both partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient treatment settings. We provide a safe and therapeutic environment where nutritional restoration and behavior change can occur. Our focus is to help patients, families, and others recognize their own strengths and empower them to take control of symptoms. Learn more at 🤍
Dedicated to tackling the stigma around mental illnesses, and eating disorders in particularly, Anastasia discusses her own personal experience battling EDNOS in hopes of generating conversation and shedding light onto misunderstood aspects of the problem. Anastasia is passionate about poetry, literature, and theatre, leading her to be heavily involved with the Drama Society as a Vice President at the LSE. Since the age of 15, she has struggled with an eating disorder known as EDNOS, and through her experience she has realised the predominance of stigma and stereotypes around this particular mental issue. Her issues have led her to take interest in both charity and healthcare, and she hopes to be more involved in both fields in the future. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at 🤍

This is the story (thus far) of me and my struggle with an eating disorder. I do not know how long I have had it (as I have always been a picky eater and not eaten much), but it has been at least since August 2011. It didn't get bad until around January, when I really started exercising and restricting calories. I am currently in recovery. I did not post this for sympathy. I decided to do this to help others out there who are struggling, because I know what they have been through. Please do not hesitate to comment or send me a message if you have any questions. No hate please.
"""I have been struggling with disordered eating for awhile. For most of this time, I wouldn't have qualified for anorexia or bulimia, which I guess throws me into the EDNOS category. But honestly, I'm pissed to find myself in such an ambiguous category, like what I'm struggling with doesn't even matter. It makes me frustrated that people only seem to care about what they call more ""extreme"" eating disorders. I'm struggling too, here. Don't I matter?"" Hey all! Thanks so much for checking out today's video. This is on OSFED / EDNOS (Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder / Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified). It's important to provide representation for this mental health condition, as many of you may not be aware that you can be diagnosed with an eating disorder outside of anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating disorder. This one hits close to home with me because I have an unspecified eating disorder, meaning it doesn't fall into any of the 4 presentations, but it is still a legitimate eating disorder that requires treatment. My eating disorder started when I was about 8 years old, and I dealt with Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and Binge Eating Disorder over more than 15 years. Now I have been recovered for over 5 years. There is always hope for recovery. If you or a loved-one is dealing with an eating disorder, I recommend getting treatment as soon as possible. A powerful short film revealing the ugly truth about eating disorders. A selection of Short of the Week, the web's leading curators of quality short films. SUBMIT A FILM: 🤍 FULL REVIEW: 🤍 Subscribe to S/W on YouTube! Website: 🤍 Instagram: 🤍 Facebook: 🤍 Twitter: 🤍 Nervosa Directed by Thessa Meijer 🤍thessameijer.com "Good films about eating disorders are hard to come by. With such well-known and distinct physical manifestations, the narratives usually revolve around food consumption and body weight and inevitably descend into voyeuristic fascination by sexing up the characters and glamourising their struggles. The feature-length drama To The Bone is a great example of the shallow, exploitative and cliche-studded rubbish that has provided as much insight into anorexia as the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why did into teenage mental health – none whatsoever. Thankfully, there are a few short films, which delve into the internal issues fuelling eating disorders in an original and authentic way, and as a result unravel a deeper truth that resonates. One of them is Egg – Martina Scarpelli’s animated fantasy horror that exposes the lesser-discussed seductive side of anorexia. Nervosa is another. Directed by Thessa Meijer (The Walking Fish), Nervosa grasps the ugly truth about the illness and handles the isolation and relentless struggles of those living with it, with unflinching honesty. Drawing from her own experience of battling with anorexia, Meijer immerses the viewer into a shocking reality, where self-hatred stifles any short-lived joy or pleasure, giving the audience a bitter taste of what suffering from an eating disorder feels like. The twelve-minute drama eschews outdated tropes and refuses to succumb to blatant thinspo, and in doing so delivers a shared experience that’s deeply personal, painfully real and at times tough to stomach. The film opens on a close-up of Jade’s legs shaking in protest, as she pushes her body and mind to their limits during a strengthening exercise. A slow camera tilt reveals her sweat-streaked face, wearing a pained but determined expression. Tracking her progress is Rex – a fitness fanatic who lives with Jade in their isolated mobile home, along with their third housemate Bo, who soon joins them holding an ice cream and observing their regular exercise regime with feigned interest. This peaceful co-existence is interrupted when an unknown woman phones Jade, worried and desperately trying to find where she is hiding and it soon transpires that Jade’s relationship with Rex and Bo is far more complex than it initially appeared. “The reason we chose the two characters of Rex and Bo is because features of eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia can coexist” – Meijer shared in an interview with S/W – “An eating disorder can offer different things to someone; a sense of warmth or a sense of control, but also a numbness that somehow feels safe, which is why Rex and Bo couldn’t be just one person with one particular image.” By personifying the eating disorders, Nervosa solidifies their physical presence, making it impossible for the lead character, or the audience, to dismiss or ignore. Jade is forever torn between satisfying her anorexia (Rex), by keeping up with the demanding fitness routine, controlling her calories and counting every bite, or succumbing to the mouth-watering temptations of bulimia (Bo), eating whatever she likes, then purging to make it all go away. When we asked Meijer about the inspiration behind the film, she explained that it all stemmed from her own experience of anorexia and the effects the illness had when it was no longer visible – “It is quickly thought that someone is fine again if they have a healthy weight, but that is not always the case. We hope that the film can be a starting point to open a conversation. That someone who recognises the struggle can show the film to a loved one and tell them that this is a bit of what that person feels. An eating disorder can already make someone so lonely, which only gives the illness more space” Continue reading on shortoftheweek.com - S/W Curator Serafima Serafimova Reproduced on this channel with the permission of the filmmakers.
