Review: Yakuza Kiwami 2 (PlayStation 4) - Defunct Games

Defunct Games reviews Yakuza Kiwami 2 by Sega, available August 28 on PlayStation 4.

Although the formula is awfully familiar, there's no denying the quality of this remake. Yakuza Kiwami 2 offers a compelling crime story filled with over-the-top characters and beautifully-realized locations. It's also a fun big-budget beat 'em up, something we don't get enough of these days. And considering how poorly the PlayStation 2 game sold back in 2006, it's nice to see this chapter of the Kazuma Kiryu saga given a much-needed facelift. The result is thrilling action game that doesn't stray too far from the tried and true Yakuza formula.

QOTD: I don't normally like PC/point & click esque games, but The Last Express! You should play it if you if haven't already. Great story/game, highly recommended...
Great review BTW.

The switch from spoken dialog also bothered me in Zelda BOTW, though it's cartoony setting offset that somewhat.

Qotd: it is actually the spiritual predecessor to this: Shenmue. Blew my mind as a 13 year old. As you can imagine, I'm pretty excited about the remakes, just need to find some time to play them. Not sure if it counts as a "crime thriller" or if that is limited to stories where the protagonist is a criminal, but it involves a criminal syndicate, so I think it qualifies.
Never played the Yakuza games but think I'll start soon. Series seemed like what Shenmue wanted to be before hitting the development hell roadblock on 3.

Favorite video crime thriller would be Snatcher.

There's several point and click crime games I could dot on like Bladerunner PC, rise of the dragon, deja vu, etc.
I’m a huge fan of GTA 3. It’s story of a nameless protagonist, caught in a power struggle between rival crime factions was/is about as good as it gets. It came out 16 years ago and changed the world of gaming. If Yakuza 2 can get a remake, then Rockstar needs to roll up their sleeves and get cracking on a remake of the title that made them.

Oh god, this guy's so repetitive in his reviews man. Listen, for once, stop making thoroughly detailed, nuanced and well narrated reviews and make a bad one!! This one in particular I hated so much with all the edits, the good intro and synced up words with GF3, and the comparison with its predessesors, I mean, this guy right, so annoying, I wish he would just go crazy and growl into his mic for half the review and the other half just swear and shout the lyrics to I like big buts and I cannot lie.

Who am I? Im a moron. As always great review brother. Keep em comin.

The original has one fighting style what the hell is this guy talking about, yakuza 0 created the multiple fighting styles, don't act like you played the original because u haven't, yakuza 1 though 5 has one fighting style for kiryu and other characters get your facts right
